Sublimation Pressing Tips: Ideas, Guides & Inspiration for Crafters & Small Business Owners

Every maker has a "first press" story, and it usually stars a ghosted edge, a faded middle, or colours that came out… not quite like the picture. Mine involved all three before breakfast. The good news: almost every pressing disaster comes down to a handful of fixable things. Here's the cheat sheet I wish someone had taped to my press.
Who is this for? Crafters pressing for fun, and small business owners pressing for customers — anyone who wants the design on the screen to be the design on the blank, first time, every time.
Time & temp tips: most sublimation blanks are happiest around 385–400°F (195–205°C) for 45–90 seconds with medium pressure — coasters and cutting boards sit nicely in the middle of that range. But every press, blank, and kitchen runs a little different, so treat those numbers as a starting line, not gospel: do one test press, adjust in small steps, and write your winning settings right on the box. Future you says thanks.
Common mistakes: ghosting — the design shifted as the press closed (tape it down). Faded or dull colour — too cool, too short, or the print went on face-up. Burned or yellowed edges — too hot or too long. Ink where ink shouldn't be — no protective paper, so the last project's ink moved in uninvited. And the classic: a coaster that curls like a potato chip because it cooled all on its own.
Pro tips: fresh protective paper above and below, every single press. Heat-tape your design so it can't budge. Print with a little bleed past the edges of the blank. Pre-press fabric and porous blanks for a few seconds to drive out moisture. And let everything cool flat under something heavy — patience now, flat coasters forever.
Project ideas: put your new powers to work — a seasonal coaster set for your market table, a cutting board and coaster bundle for gift baskets, matching mug-and-coaster pairs for teacher gifts, or a press-your-own craft night with friends: you bring the blanks, they bring the snacks.
Good things are pressed here — it says so right on the coaster. Press happy, and when in doubt: test press first, coffee second.
